In the beginning was the plan

The story of each individual ORION luminaire begins even before production. Because first you need a blueprint. This is elaborated in the house from the idea to the conception to the finished "Design by ORION". A sample of the new lamp is made and critically eyed. If it meets the requirements of ORION, it may either go into production as a product series or be produced as a solution to a project.


And it became a list

For each luminaire, a so-called bill of material has to be created in the next step. This is essentially a checklist that includes all parts of a lamp. Once available for a single model, the actual work order can be edited. For this, all required materials are picked and the individual departments are supplied with their respective required material.


The basis of most luminaires from ORION is made of brass, ie an alloy of copper and zinc. In order to provide the same high quality standard over many years, we strive to always source the brass from the same producers. Currently the manufacturer are mainly from Germany.

Brass as a base material is superior to iron, because it is rustproof and therefore very durable. However, this quality also has its price: Brass is both more expensive and more complex to process than iron


Precision from the wrist

The raw material of our lights first comes to the workshop. By different processing methods, the individual parts get their basic form: punching in the printing press, cutting, drilling, bending, soldering, milling and also cutting threads. The workshop staff carefully inspect each part before moving to the surface departments.


The first cut

Once there, the parts must first be treated mechanically. Smaller components of the lamps lose their unwanted corners and edges in ball polishers, larger ones must be handled manually in the grinding shop piece by piece. In the next step, the parts are degreased and chemically cleaned to remove all residues for the noble ORION surface treatment.


Confess color

Once the components have been cleaned, they can take a bath in the fully automated electroplating department - and create the beautiful gold or chrome luster for which the ORION luminaires are prized. Surfaces, such as "patina" or "bronze" are then shaded by hand again to get your characteristic microsection. Then the materials receive their final surface treatment in the paint shop, where all parts are coated with a protective varnish, which is then cured in ovens at about 120 degrees Celsius. ORION uses an electrostatic painting process. Thereafter, each piece is subjected to renewed strict control separately.

By the way: Both in the degreasing and in the electroplating arise contaminated with pollutants wastewater. In order to make the processes in the lighting factory as environmentally friendly as possible, the ORION plant has its own wastewater treatment plant, where all the wastewater produced is reprocessed before being fed to the circuit once again. Another special feature of ORION.


Complex manual work

In the assembly department or at home, the individual parts are assembled into complete lighting fixtures.

The "One on One" principle prevails: all components of an ORION luminaire are assembled by the same assembly technician: from the linking of the crystal hanger to the screwing together of the base frame to the compilation of the finished luminaire composition. This avoids sources of error and reaches our high quality level.

Especially when assembling crystal chandeliers an immense dexterity is required.


Tested quality, packed for worldwide transport

Once a luminaire from the Design by ORION program has been completed, it will have to pass further tests:

an optical, if the luminaire is assembled correctly and, above all, whether the surface of the finished luminaire is flawless,
and an electrical test that checks the luminaire for proper functioning.
First series also have to go to the laboratory for certification.
Once the ORION light has passed all tests positively, it can be packed and transported to the central warehouse from where it will travel to its destination.
